Hifiman TWS-600 truly wireless down to $79

IF you prefer to try your luck with truly-wireless earphones from headphone companies instead of consumer electronics companies, the new condition Hifiman TWS-600 truly wireless (with bluetooth 5.0 and low latency support) are currently down to $79 at the Amazon website, sold by the Hifiman Amazon store and the Gramophone Amazon store, both fulfilled by Amazon so Prime members get their fast(er) free delivery.

They also promise a range of up to 150 meters in open unobstructed areas (eg open fields), up to 38.5 hours playing time (WITH the charging case). They are IPX-4 rated, and per the product description over there, they “required” 10-20 hours of burn in 🙂

They average 3.8 out of 5 based on 110+ customer reviews and have near half of that in peer-answered questions…

PS: my only experience so far with “truly wireless” are the Jaybird Run TW, so I can’t help much 🙂

Bravo Ocean Tube (12AU7) head-amp for $55 [MD]

Want something to remind you of …the ocean while listening to music? How about the new condition Bravo Ocean Tube headphone tube amplifier (12AU7) with two headphone outputs (3.5mm and 1/4″) going for $55 with free US shipping at Massdrop’s website for the next two days and change from blog-posting time. It has two inputs as well, RCA and 3.5mm, and an RCA pre-amp output as well.

There is no mention of warranty in the listing. Orders will ship in late April 2020…

Koss KSC-75X Open Clip-Ons for $20 [MD]

Quite possible one of the best bang for the buck headphones out there and now it comes with a mic/remote combination thanks to the Massdrop KSC-75X edition. And this goes for just $20 with free US shipping and returns, and a lifetime KOSS warrant to boot! And you can change the earpads.

In case you are not familiar, these are open clip-ons, and among other things they are a lightweight alternative to over-ear headphones for long listening sessions for various reasons (heat, eyeglasses, discomfort, skull pressure, hairstyles, toothaches, headaches, etc, etc).

I have the original KSC-75 that I “rescued” from the clearance bin of an office supply store a few years ago, and have a text & pictures unboxing of them. I do not yet have the KSC-75X but I will be placing an order of this mic/remote version.

FOCAL Spark wired in-ears for $31 [blue only]

Woot is getting more organized these days (or I should say less chaotic), they even group products they offer by category. And in the headphone category we find the new condition blue color scheme of the wired FOCAL Spark In-Ears going for just under $31 with free shipping for Prime members or $6 for non-members [everything you buy during the calendar day in the Texas time zone]…

IT comes with a 90-day Woot warranty and up to ten per customer. It is only available in blue…

Bose QuietComfort 35 II (Rose Gold) ANC/BT Over-Ears for $248

If you like rose-gold color-schemed headphones, you are in luck! Amazon is offering the new condition Rose-Gold limited edition Bose Quiet Comfort QC35 II closed-back over-ears with bluetooth and ANC for $248 with free US shipping and a limit of three pairs per customer at the sale price. This is a limited time offer, but not a lightning deal, so I do not know when the price changes…

With the Corona having many people locked in, ANC and closed-back over-ears may be in order for every household 🙂 Unlike in-ears, having a giant set of over-ear headphones on your head screams “DON’T YOU DARE BOTHER ME!” 🙂

This may indeed be on its way out of the market because it is marked as “Discontinued” at B&H Photo which previously had it on sale before it got discontinued…

NOTE: that this model does NOT use bluetooth 5.0, so if you need BT 5, you have to wait for a newer model. It also uses micro-USB charging; again, if you are living a “USB-C Lifestyle”, you have to wait for a newer model.. OR look at other manufacturers 🙂

PS: keep in mind though, that for Bluetooth 5, and other assorted protocols, both devices have to support it. Otherwise it will resort to the highest common denominator. A Bluetooth 5.0 headphone connecting with a Bluetooth 4.1 smartphone will not connect as Bluetooth 5, but as BT 4.1 or lower ~ depending on what both of them can support…

Woot Audio sale includes refurbished Jaybird bluetooth earphones (F2: $20, X2: $25)

Wednesday: Eargams Earplugs, Aluratek BT Receiver

Some action among the Wednesday March 25 in 2020 daily deals of head-interest. Woot is having an app-only offer (you can only buy it using the official Woot apps), it is the new condition Eargasm Earplus with Gift Box ranging from $17 to $18, with up to three pairs per customer. They come with a 90-day Woot warranty…

Meanwhile at Best Buy, they have the new condition Aluratek iStream bluetooth receiver going for $20.

Hifiman HE-4XX Planar Open Over-Ears for $145 [MD]

IF you are planar curious but don’t want to break the bank, Massdrop is offering the new condition Hifiman HE-4XX open over-ears for $145 with free US shipping and free US returns with a 1-year manufacturer warranty [since this product is in partnership with Hifiman).

This is an in-stock drop, so it will ship in about a business day after your purchase. Your credit card will be charged about two hours after your purchase.

A 3-year “Warranty and Accidental Coverage” is offered for an additional +$20 for US addresses. Given Hifiman’s reliability woes, this may not be a bad idea. Check the MD comments and your favorite audiophool audiophile forums for more on this…

RadSone Earstudio ES100 Mark II for $85 [MD]

IF you are looking for a DAC/amp that resembles a Sandisk Clip rather than the traditional powerbank-thick portable DAC/amps, Massdrop is running an offering on the new condition RadSone EarStudio ES100 Mark II for $85 with free US shipping. This will ship in late April 2020. There’s no mention of warranty in the listing.

Optionally, you can buy it together (via their shopping cart) with the HE100 in-ears for $40 more, making it a $125 total. The HE100 are NOT included standard. Their specs are at the bottom of the Massdrop product page for reference only. You have to buy them for +$40 if you want them.

On the other hand, if you don’t want to wait until the end of April 2020, there are many options available at Amazon as follows:

  • new condition Mark II for $100, USED for $87
  • “Amazon Renewed” Mark II for $80
  • new condition Mark I for $90
  • “Amazon Renewed” Mark I for $70

What is Amazon Renewed?
It’s an Amazon program that encourages sellers to offer high(er) quality and tested non-new products with a minimum 90-day warranty. These can be refurbished, open box or used. What matters is their quality and warranty. To get a better feel for it, these are the requirements for sellers wanting to offer “Amazon Renewed” products…

FREE NuForce Stride bluetooth earphones with Sennheiser HD6XX purchase for $195

For a limited time only (expiration date is not mention), you will automatically [no coupon needed, no additional action on your behalf] receive a FREE NuForce Stride bluetooth earphone with the purchase of the new condition open-back over-ear Sennheiser HD 6XX headphones for $195 with free US shipping and free US returns from the Massdrop website. This is an “in-stock drop” so it will ship in one business day after purchase, it won’t take weeks and weeks like the traditional Massdrop offerings…

To ensure the offer is running, use your browser’s in-page search feature (eg CTRL F in Chrome) looking for “NuForce” or “Stride”. You will see this promotion mentioned multiple times in the listing. Even though it does not appear “above the fold” (on the part of the page that fills up some screens, eg laptops).

The HD 6XX come with a 2-year manufacturer warranty since they are produced in co-operation with Hennheiser 🙂 The NuForce kit includes a hard case and six sets of eartips and a microUSB cable. No mention of warranty on the NuForce.

When you click the “BUY” button that takes you to the shopping cart, you will not see the NuForce mentioned there. The options you see in the shopping cart are for additional optional purchases (extra earpads, cables, DAC/amp, warranty) and a shipping upgrade option. Most of the optional items are offered with an additional combined purchase discount, eg the Drop+ THX AAA 789 linear amplifier is +$300 instead of $400 which sells on its own.

NOTE that this is the recently revised HD 6XX. Check the Massdrop and the interwebs for more details if you are not already familiar with the revisions…

Westone WX earphone w/BT cable for $50 [ends Mon 8am ET]

The Musician’s Friend deal of the day ending by Monday 3/23/20 at 8am eastern time is the new condition Westone WX single driver earphone with a bluetooth cable going for $50 with free US shipping. Offer ends earlier if sold out. 8% membership rewards (free to join if you are not already a member)…

Now shipping: Pixel 3a Smartphone with 3.5mm headphone jack ($299 to $379)

The time has come 3.5mm headphone jack fans! It’s a brand new Google Pixel smartphone with a 3.5mm headphone jack. But it’s not the flagship. It’s the “a” model, the affordable model, with the Pixel 3a going for $299 right now with free US shipping at B&H Photo, while the larger Pixel 3a XL goes for $379. There are no other storage options. Only the color scheme of the phone.

They have 4GB of RAM, the modern 18.5 : 9 aspect ratio, the SnapDragon 670 processor, 64GB of on-board storage but sadly no memory card slot, Bluetooth 5.0 for those who have newer bluetooth headphones, Wifi Direct (not to be confused with the totally different protocol “Wifey Direct”), NFC [when there are connection dogfights in the air between multiple devices in your household/office], Android 9, 3-years of updates, unlimited Google Photos storage, factory unlocked with USA warranty and so forth…

Mayhaps this is the closest Google has come to making a Nexus phone in the Pixel era. If I was buying a phone right now I would consider it in this price range ~ assuming you can live with just 64GB of storage that is. Because even with streaming (eg Spotify) you have the option of downloading (frequently played) music because 5G is coming but the carriers are still hoarding data like giant corporate dragons in their lairs 😉

UPDATE: speaking of daily deals, one of the 100 Kindle e-books offered for this day is Leonard Cohen’s “The Flame: Poems Notebooks Lyrics Drawings” (288 pages) going for $4.

Friday: Corsair Game, Jabra TW, SoundCore ANC/BT Over-Ears

Friday 3/20/20 has a trio of headphone-related daily deals at a couple of online retailers as follows:

At NewEgg, they offer the refurbished Jabra Elite Active 65t truly-wireless for $50, sold by the Jabra Online store through NewEgg.

Meanwhile Anker’s own NewEgg store is offering the new condition Soundcore Life 2 Active ANC/bluetooth closed-back over-ears for $40 after you enter promo code 93XPG85 in the shopping cart. A compact hard-shell travel case is included in the package which of course you can use with any other headphones or audio gear (think portable DACs, amps, DAPs, PADs, etc) that fit inside.

For many people, an order of magnitude in price difference (when you compare to the $300+ ANC/BT over-ear flagships from BOSE, Sony, Beats, Sennheiser, etc) is one of the reasons these non-designed brands are selling like hot cakes among The Common People.

I’m not sure Euron would be wearing these, but they are Corsair so they fit his career choice 😉 One of the Best Buy daily deals is the new condition CORSAIR VOID PRO RGB Wireless (Dolby 7.1-Channel Surround Sound Gaming Headset) going for $55 with free S&H or store pickup…

Monday: PADs and Cards

It’s PADs and Cards day at the Amazon Gold Box until 11:59pm PT on 3/16/20! You can get the new condition US warranty Samsung Galaxy Note 9 (yes, it has a 3.5mm headphone jack ~ unlike the Note 10 models ~ except for the Note 10 Lite which uses older hardware but has a headphone jack) PAD (phone as DAP) for $600 with free US shipping… Or jump to the 512GB on-board storage model (think of how many FLACs you can put there!!!) for $750, that’s $150 more to for an extra 384GB…

And on the cards front, to feed your PADs and DAPs and such, you can get the new condition 400GB Sandisk Ultra micro SD for $53 with free USA shippings…

Monday: Sony WH-1000X M3 for $230

The new condition Sony WH-1000X M3 (third generation as the “3” in the name boldly suggests) is on sale for $230 with free US shipping for Prime members [or $6 flat shipping for non-members] until Monday 3/16/20 at 11:59pm central time at the Woot website as one of their daily deals. Up to ten per customer at the sale price. It comes with a 1-year Sony warranty. It averages 4.6 out of 5 based on 6600+ customer reviews over there…

Meanwhile at Amazon Germany they have an Anker Audio sale that includes a couple of truly-wireless, an exercise bluetooth earphone and a touch-controlled ANC/BT over-ear combo…

Friday: Neil Young’s “To Feel the Music (a songwriter mission to save high quality audio)” for $3

Good until Friday 3/13/20 at 11:59pm pacific time, Neil Young and Phil Baker’s “To Feel the Music” Kindle ebook is one of their deals du jour going for $3. This is a 270 page ebook published in September 2019. It talks about high-quality audio in the digital age with the Pono story as a backbone.

I just purchased the book after going through the Kindle sample (it includes the various intros/prologues and the first couple of chapters) and will be reading it. I will be taking notes and if I have enough notes and things that merit discussion, I will be writing about it on the content-side of this website. In the Kindle Sample, Phil Baker did a good explaining in simple terms to the “common people” digital audio. Although I may take some technical issue with the pixel analogy but again the point is to make this accessible to the average Joe who’s listening to 28Kbps YouTube video music through a $10 half-working earbud 🙂

Friday: Timmkoo $13 earphones, iPod Touch (6th Gen), Philips DeepSleep

Friday March 13 in 2020 is a little bit lucky in that a couple of retailers have daily deals on headphone-related products as follows:

At Woot Clearance, they offer the new condition TimmKkoo in-ears for $13 with free shipping for Prime members or $5 flat shipping. You have choices too, they are available as wired, in a conventional necklace-style cable, or wireless with an earhook (the exercise style type). The price is the same regardless of option and they have black and red color schemes available. The wired have a 3-button remote/mic and come with some accessories too. They average 4.2 out of 5 based on 60+ customer reviews at Amazon (per Woot’s website)…

Then at Electronics::Woot, they have new condition 6th Generation iPod Touch music players with prices ranging from $165 (32GB) to $220 (128GB). Keep in mind that iPods don’t have a microSD slot, so if you are fond of downloading lots of files or using high-res files on-device…

And among the “new age” headphones, the headliner deal of the day at the Best Buy website is the new condition Philips SmartSleep Deep Sleep headband-style headphone going for $260. It averages 3.3 out of 5 based on 19 customer reviews, so read up on it before buying for sure!

Wedn: Samson SR-850B Semi-Open Over-Ears for $25

Good until 11:59pm eastern time on Wednesday February 11 in 2020 (or earlier if it happens to sellout), there’s a value deal at B&H Photo, it is the new condition Samson SR-850B semi-open over-ear studio headphones going for $25 with free US shipping. This is the blue color scheme of the model, not to be confused with the original black. There are 35 customer reviews of them both over there with a 4.5 out of 5 average. One of them is a burn-in report 🙂

As fate would have it, I had the original black version and here’s our text and pictures unboxing.

Wedn: Audio T. ATH-CKR-55-BT bluetooth earphones for $20

Did bluetooth kill the wired star? You will find plenty of debates of this in various audio-related forums and websites, and you may also be able to sing that question to the tune of “Video Killed the Radio Star” but in the meantime, good until 3/4/20 at 11:59pm ET, B&H Photo is offering the new condition Audio Technica ATH-CKR-55-BT bluetooth earphones for $20 with free US shipping in your choice of black or blue color scheme…

This is a new arrival with no customer reviews as of the time of writing…

Sunday (2/23/20) is a headphone/audio-related day in the various retailer daily deals. We start at B&H Photo where their house brand Auray headphone stand goes for $12 and averages 4.5 out of 5 based on 28 customer reviews. But that’s not all, their other daily deals include the JBL 308P Mark II 8-inch two-way studio monitor for $130 after an in-cart coupon…

Meanwhile of the Best Buy daily deals, you can get the new condition MEE Audio Cinema wireless/ANC over-ear headphones for $60 with free US shipping…

It is $29 before the coupon. Keep in mind these come with a 90-day warranty from Woot, not the standard Samsung warranty ~ according to the listing that is…

The sale items are listed on their daily deals page and they change every day. If you are checking this at any other day, you’ll see a different set of daily deals…

Westone Adventure Alpha Cross-Over In-Ears for $69

Good for a very limited time, Adorama is offering the new condition Westone Adventure Alpha Cross-Over In-Ears for $69 with free US shipping. The price you see is the price you pay while this short-running promotion is live…

No, they won’t cross over like Iverson, but they do cross over your ear 🙂

Monday: Fiio X5 III DAP for $180

Digital audio players (DAP) are feeling left out this days (outside the world of hard core portable audiophiles) so it is nice to see a non-toy DAP featured in the daily deals of a retailer. Good until Monday 2/10/20 at 11:59pm eastern (or earlier if the hungry audio-goblings munch it out) is the new condition Fiio X5 III (third generation; typing it twice to inoculate against a typo) going for $180 with free USA shipping at B&H Photo. Up to three per customer at the sale price during this promotion…

Of the Fiios I have the first generation X1 (the one without bluetooth) and it was definitely worth the price (around $100 at the time of purchase). And as fate would have it I have a text and pictures unboxing of the first generation X1. A review is / has-been coming for many months years 🙂

Sennheiser HD 200 + Behringer UMC-404-HD Audio Interface for $179

For a very limited time only, Adorama is offering a Sennheiser x Behringer bundle for $179 with free shipping within the USA. For that price, you get two different items:

  • Sennheiser HD 200 closed-back over-ears
  • Behringer U-PHORIA UMC404HD audio interface

No coupon, no rebate. The sale price is reflected on their website while this promotion is running…

Beyerdynamic DT770 PRO for $145 (choice of 32/80/250)

If you want to score one of the frequently-discussed affordable closed-back over-ear headphones and you don’t want to compromise on which ohm-age to get based on a random sale, $145 will get you the new condition Beyerdynamic DT-770 PRO at the Massdrop website.

You have a choice of 32 or 80 or 250 ohm. They have 3 meter glued-on cables. The 250 has a coiled cable while the other two are straight. The accessories package is spartan, a drawstring bag (the plus with these is that you can use them for many other headphones as well ~ unlike custom-fit cases that are limited to other use) and the almost always obligatory adapter (in this case a 1/8″ to 1/4″).

These will ship in late February from Massdrop. No mention of warranty in the listing.

Friday: Audio Technica ATH-m50X Gun Metal for $124

Another one of the “affordable audiophile” frequently recommended headphones is on sale, $124 is what separates you from the new condition Audio Technica M50x Gun Metal (GM) with free US shipping by Amazon actual and you can buy as many as you want until 11:59pm pacific on Friday 2/7/2020.

It is one of their daily deals, that’s why that expiration time. The other options are not on sale. If you don’t have an Amazon Store card or credit card, you may be offered sign-up bonuses. I’m seeing an offer for $60 off this purchase if I sign up and approved for their Store Card. The store card offer is definitely YMMV as their AI decides in mysterious ways in what to offer and to whom and when…

PS: Ultimate Ears are owned by Logitech, which is building up its audio-related portfolio, they even scooped up Blue Mic

1More Triple Driver Over Ears for $125

If you are curious about 1More’s Triple Driver closed-back [the “open look” is just a style choice] over-ear headphones, you can score them for $124 with free US shipping at the members-only but free-to-join Massdrop website

Shipping is extra elsewhere. Limit up to three pairs per customer at the sale price…

There it averages 4.1 out of 5 based on nearly 10,000 customer reviews but note that all the variants of this model are grouped together in the listing (with or without ANC, SE and not SE, etc)…
