Sony MDR-100ABN Bluetooth ANC Over-Ears for $179

Automated price-matching time at Amazon, where their little price bots have price-matched Beach Camera’s $179 price on the new condition Sony MDR-100ABN Bluetooth ANC Over-Ears in the black and blue color schemes. In those individual listings, you will notice that this price is offered by both Amazon actual and Beach Cameras, so make sure you add to the shopping cart the seller of your choice.

These have a similar name to the wired-only MDR-100AAP. Apparently no one at Sony thinks “AAP” and “ABN” are not confusing and they are consumer friendly names 🙂

Refurbished Bose QC35 with full warranty for $260

If you missed out the earlier $300 Rakuten sale on the Bose QC35 Quiet Comfort headphones (with Bluetooth and ANC), and don’t want to wait for the return of the sale, fear not. The official BOSE eBay store is offering them in factory renewed condition with the same warranty as the new condition model for $260 in black or silver color scheme with a limit of up to five per customer. BOSE is no longer the only game in town when it comes to ANC. It now has actual contenders in the new Sony MDR-1000X and others. More and more audio and electronics manufacturers are congregating on the $300-ish over-ears with ANC and bluetooth segment. A popular and profitable combo it seems.

PS: last week’s “This Week in Headphoolia” [previous editions] roundup should be posted by tonight. I will post a separate alert when it’s ready. I had assembled all the links by Sunday, but ran out of time to actually write the post. Then Prime Day hit and here we are 🙂

Sony MDR-XB950 B1 for $148, N1 for $178 [LDAC support]

Revealed at CES 2017 the new Sony MDR XB 950 duo is on sale again at authorized Sony dealers. They are both closed-back, and part of the Extra Bass family, with the B1 being bluetooth, while the N1 is both bluetooth and active noise cancelling.

The B1 goes for $148 at various places including Dell Home and various at Amazon in three different color schemes.

The N1 goes for $178 at various authorized dealers including Buydig and various at Amazon in two different colors, including the less common green (more of an industrial/black green, definitely not the AKG Quincy Jones green)

They support LDAC
I should point out that both of these headphones support LDAC, Sony’s technology [see also the Sony Asia page for it] that is being baked into Android 8.0.

For a history of LDAC, starting in August 2015, check this AV Hub article.

With this, Android 8.0 will have support for LDAC, AAC, SBC, apt-X and apt-X HD, with sample ratio options as well. You can manually select them or use the system default.

It is important to point out that both your music source and your headphones have to support the protocol you want to use, otherwise the system will automatically default to a lower common denominator. For example, a Bluetooth 5 music source (eg Galaxy S8) connecting to a Bluetooth 2.X headphone will use Bluetooth 2.X, not Bluetooth 5 since the headphone would not know what to do with it.

Sony MDR-1000X ANC and Bluetooth Over-Ears for $328

These have a lot of techie features, including touch controls, head detection, NFC, custom app (although after the Bose situation it may not sound as appealing), along with Bluetooth and ANC.

Refurbished Sony MDR-1000X ANC and BT for $260

On the other hand, if you prefer the newer MDR-1000X headphones over the MDR 100 sale, and if you are willing to go certified refurbished, you can get the MDR-1000X in certified refurbished condition by Secondipity thru Amazon in the black color scheme (Prime eligible) and the silver/white/cream color scheme (not Prime eligible).
