Archives for December 2016
Book: “All The Songs: The Story Behind Every Beatles Release”
This is a two-parter. On-going is a sale for $2 of the Kindle e-book version of “All The Songs: The Story Behind Every Beatles Release” by Philippe Margotin and Jean-Michel Guesdon. NOTE however that the e-book DOES NOT have the pictures. The hardcover is a fully illustrated book, but the Kindle e-book has the text only, not the pictures. It is 672 pages. The ebook is good for reading and searching and quickly referencing the text but not the visual/pictures.
However, the hardcover edition will be a lightning deal on Tuesday starting at 7pm ET at Amazon. The price before the sale is $35 for the hardcover.
Westone UM2 Dual-Driver In-Ears for $180

Panasonic RP-HJX5 drops360 In-Ears for $15
The Panasonic RP-HJX5 drops360 In-Ears are on sale for $15 in the blue color scheme and $20 in the red color schemes by various “fulfilled by Amazon” sellers. Since this is a low price and you have the “fulfilled by Amazon” safety blanket, this is not an unreasonable risk to take. Needless to say, the risk would be a lot higher if these were $1000 headphones 🙂
Samsung Level U neckback bluetooth earbuds for $30
Speaking of Samsung, their Level U neckback bluetooth earbuds are on sale as well, also in the black color scheme, going for $30 with a limit of up to three sets per customer at Amazon by Amazon actual. The other three color schemes are not participating in the sale.
Samsung Gear IconX Cordfree Earbuds for $150 [was $162]
On the technobabble earbud front, Samsung’s Gear IconX Cordfree, in the black color scheme, in new condition with US warranty, are on sale for $150 [was $162] with free shipping with a limit of three units per customer at Amazon by Amazon actual. The other two colors go for more… Price updated here on 12/6/16 at 5:56pm ET…
On the other hand, if you prefer seller-refurbished, at A4C these are in refurbished condition for $120 with free shipping and a 90-day replacement warranty by A4C (not Samsung).
Speaking of A4C, one of their other Monday daily deals is the refurbished red-black on-ear JBL Synchros E40BT bluetooths for $40 with free shipping and a likewise 90-day replacement warranty covered by the seller A4C, not JBL.
PS: this was not posted by design, but JBL is now owned by Samsung 🙂
Bowers & Wilkins P3 (first gen) On-Ears for $64 to $75 [updated]
UPDATED 12/6/16 at 4:55pm ET…
If you are dreaming of a red headphone Christmas, promo code MBLB1205 with mobile checkout at NewEgg drops the price of the red color scheme of the Bowers & Wilkins P3 closed-back on-ears by 15% off. The web browser price is $75 with free shipping. The coupon with mobile checkout drops it to around $64. This is sold and shipped by NewEgg actual.
The white color scheme sold out: white color scheme of the Bowers & Wilkins P3 closed-back on-ears by 15% off.
PS: I am not sure if mobile checkout refers to their mobile website or using the NewEgg app or both.

This ships directly from Gramophone and it is not Prime eligible.
Massdrop x Fostex TH-X00 for $400
It’s back on again. Fostex the people! The Massdrop x Fostex TH-X00 is ready to go for $400 with free shipping. It is running for the next eight days (until around 12/14~ or so; they don’t provide an expiration time, only “8d left” so you can’t pinpoint it to a specific time). About 1300 units are available and this will ship fairly quickly by MD standards, mid-December 2016. It will likely arrive before Christmas – knock on wood (pun intended).
[DEAD] 1-Year Dropbox PRO + $50 Gift Card for $100 (ends Tue 3am ET)
I don’t know why Dropbox waited until AFTER the Amazon Gold Deal to announce their mobile folder sync option, because this is a great feature for music 🙂 Regardless the Gold Box offer is now over…
If you like to store or backup or stream your music from a semi-DIY cloud, among the Monday gold box offers is a Dropbox PRO promotion. This is for brand new PRO subscribers, in other words, you can’t use this offer to add years to an existing PRO or Business subscriptions. You can use this to upgrade from the Free tier or start a new subscription. You get one year of the Dropbox PRO subscription (includes 1TB of cloud storage) and a $50 Amazon plastic gift card, together for $100. After the first year ends, this auto-renews at $99 per year unless you cancel it. Offer ends by Tuesday at 3am ET.

[DEAD] Sennheiser HD 558 for $80 (Monday)
The day is over and this recurring daily deal expired… Buried towards the bottom of the Best Buy daily deals for Monday is the new condition open-back over-ear Sennheiser HD 558 going for $80 with free shipping or free store pickup.

Beyerdynamic DT880 PREMIUM (250 ohm) Chrome Limited Edition for $150

PS: I suppose they could turn this into a Battlestar Galactica version, the “Toasters Chrome” 🙂
YMMV 15% back on Sony headphones with Amazon Prime Store card
NOTE: this post is based on the banners shown at the Amazon website. I haven’t done this promotion, so I can’t give you a more detailed breakdown of what to expect.
While you are browsing around the Amazon website or app, a banner shows up that says you get 15% back on Sony products when you pay for them using the Amazon Prime store credit card. This means you have to be a Prime member, because the “Prime Store Card” is only available to members. Their default store card is just called “Store Card”. The offer ends on Saturday 12/10/16.
This is a longer post, more after the break…
Parrot Zik (first generation) for $80 [updated]
If you are Parrot Zik curious, but don’t want to spend triple figures to satisfy the technobabble headphone curiosity, the first generation headphone is available in the black/gold color scheme for $80 with free shipping by the official Parrot Zik eBay store. Limit five per customer….
UPDATED 12/12/16 with new eBay listing for the same price.
PS: the three negative eBay feedbacks that bring down their eBay score to 97.1% are on drones.
Hifiman HE-350 for $100 [MD]
When it rains, it pours, and when it drops, it massdrops 🙂 Or something like that – the Hifiman HE-350 is back again at members-only Massdrop for its customary price of $100 with free shipping. The offer runs until about 12/11/16 or so, and is expected to ship mid-December 2016. This is not a planar magnetic headphone, Hifiman makes all kinds of headphones, even though they may be more well-known for their recent planar onslaught.
Speaking of Hifiman, the RE-400 non-buttoned earphones continue to sell for just under $49 and Prime eligible. The “just under $49” is important if you are not a Prime member; if you cross $49 you get free shipping.
DarkVoice 336SE OTL Headphone Amp for $213 [MD]
Glowing now at Massdrop, for the next six days (from blog-posting date) is the DarkVoice 336SE OTL Headphone Amp going for $200 plus $13~ flat shipping. Note however that orders will ship early January 2017, so it won’t be on time for the Holidays. You have a choice of power supply during checkout.
Ultrasone Go Closed-Back for $50 w/free S&H
More Ultrasone daily deal action, the closed-back Ultrasone Go foldable headphones are on sale for $50 with free shipping at B&H Photo and Video. This sale continues… good until 11:59pm eastern on Sunday night.

Another brand generating some under the radar buzz, the 1MORE Triple Driver In-Ears are currently on sale for $85 with free shipping at Amazon by Amazon actual with a limit of three units per customer.

PS: a few more of their headphones are now sold Prime eligible.
Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 Over-Ear Bluetooth with ANC for $347
Sennheiser insists on premium prices for the Bluetooth and ANC combo over-ears, namely the Momentum 2.0, which makes $347 with free shipping a sale, with a limit of five units per customer, at Amazon by Amazon actual.
Sony MDR-100ABN/B for $220 (BT, ANC)
If you missed the $200 lightning deal, here’s another sale, albeit not as low, you can get the Sony MDR-100ABN/B over-ears (bluetooth, active noise cancelling) in the Black and Viridian color schemes for $220 with free shipping, with a limit of up to three per color per customer at Amazon by Amazon actual. This time it is not a lightning deal so there’s no preset expiration date. It could be a price-match.
[DEAD] Starts Sunday 11:24am ET: Gibson Trainer TH100/27 (Usain Bolt)
Today’s round of lightning offers expired…
[DEAD] Saturday: Sony MDR-XB950AP for $60
This daily deal expired, but some of them are recurring across the interwebs during the holidays, so who knows if/when it will return again…
Used Fiio EX1 in-ears for $49
And now some used action, the Fiio EX1 in-ears are available in “Used – Acceptable” condition (without any further details provided on the condition) for $48.99 by Amazon Warehouse Deals. That extra penny is important if you are not a Prime member because $49+ gets you free shipping. If you need something else, check the low cost items at the bottom of this post.
Focal Spirit Classic Over-Ears for $199
More discounting on the Focal front, their over-ear closed-back Focal Spirit Classic are on sale for $199 with free shipping by a couple of recognizable sellers at amazon.com (AudioLAB, Zorro) and also by AudioLAB on eBay.
Focal Sphear In-Ears for $87
I haven’t checked up on these in a while, but they are now in double figures, the new condition Focal Sphear in-ears are going for $87 with free shipping by a few recognizable sellers whose listings are Prime eligible at amazon.com and Audiolab on eBay.
AKG K181 DJ UE for $63 w/fast shipping [MD]
Massdrop has a feature they call a “Bazaar”, where they sell remaining quantities of various products in their warehouse, and they ship those quickly like a normal retailer (around two business with free shipping). Supplies are very limited, but as of the time of writing, they have over 30 units of the closed-back on-ear AKG K181 DJ headphones for $63. They come with a 2-year AKG warranty. This offer will last as long as they have units available, so YMMV depending on when you are reading this.
Beyerdynamic Custom Street On-Ears for $69
The Beyerdynamic closed-back on-ears are on sale again, in black or white, in new condition for $69 to $70 by various sellers fulfilled by Amazon. They average 4.5 out of 5 based on 17 customer reviews.
I bought these in September 2016, an impulse-review buy when they were similarly on sale, and I am running an on-going and slow-moving review diary (latest entry: exposed by Heliotrope’s latest album). There’s also a text and pictures Unboxing post which is final since you can only take them out of the box once 🙂
Rosewill Wood Earphones for $9 w/free S&H
In parallel to the previously mentioned on-ear sale, also good until Monday 12/5/16, NewEgg is offering the new condition Rosewill Wood Earphones, model RHTS-11002, for $9 with free shipping. Again, this is smooth sailing, no rebates, no promo codes, no jumping through hoops, just add to cart and proceed.
Rosewill Wood On-Ears for $10 (RWH-002) or $20 (RWH-001) w/free S&H
Good until Monday 12/5/16, at NewEgg, without any rebates or coupons or promo codes or any other hoops, you just add to cart, you can get a couple of their Rosewill wood on-ear headphones with free shipping as follows: the RWH-002 goes for $10, while the RWH-001 goes for $20.
PS: there’s only so many ways you can design portable budget on-ear headphones, but by looking at the pictures, they may share a common OEM root with the AmazonBasics On-Ears. Note that this is only speculation based on looking at the online pictures. I do not have them here side by side, so YMMV!
Ultrasone PRO 900i Folding Closed for $230 after $20 MIR
One of the latest offers at Adorama.com is the new condition Ultrasone PRO 900i Folding Closed-back headphones with their S-Logic buzzword technology offered for $230 after a $20 mail-in rebate. With free shipping. The mail-in rebate expire 12/4/16. The sale price is guaranteed until 12pm ET on Sunday Saturday, unless it sells out. It may continue later or not, I do not know.
AKG K553 Pro Studio Headphone for $120
The older AKG K550 is currently going for $90 by AKG thru NewEgg but a more recently released model, the AKG K553 Pro, is fully unlocked at members-only Massdrop for $120 with free shipping. It will ship mid-December 2016 and comes with a 2-year warranty from AKG, which is co-operating with MD for co-branded products. This particular offer runs for the next eight days (from blog-posting date). As the “K5” in the model name hints at, this is a closed-back headphone as well.
