Free Essential USB-C Earphones with Essential Phone for $450

The Essential PH-1 from Android “father” Andy Rubin is one of the headphones WITHOUT a headphone jack. To encourage people to give this smartphone a try, especially now that it is getting discounted, Amazon and Essential are including a FREE pair of Essential USB-C earphones with purchase of the new condition Essential PH-1 smartphone for $450 with free shipping. Three phone color schemes are available, including the Amazon-exclusive “Halo Gray”.

The earphones goes for $99 on their own and they have a 1-button remote/mic and support USB Audio Class 2 according to the product description.

For more on USB-C audio, Anandtech explains the USB Device Audio Class 3.0 which allows for digital audio and analog audio over a USB-C port. However, not all smartphones support analog audio over USB-C (by re-assigning pins) which creates confusion and frustration among USB-C users who try to mix and match devices…

Google USB-C DAC/amp for $9 w/free S&H

Google announced this at a higher price than Apple’s lightning adapter, but reality hit them, common sense prevailed, and Google’s very own USB-C DAC/amp adapter is now going for $9 with free shipping (even if you don’t buy anything else) at the official Google Store. You can’t use Google Play gift card balance to pay for it though, the Google Store insists on credit cards, while almost anything you buy at the Google Play store (including music subscriptions) can use your Gift Card balance.

I bought this a few days ago, and it’s here, so we have our customary practical text and pictures unboxing of it. But don’t expect a tiny box in the mail, mine came in a giant padded envelope:

FREE JBL Aware C USB-C earphones with HTC U11 purchase for $599

During the Black Friday and Cyber Monday festivities, the HTC website has dropped the price of their U11 smartphone (no headphone jack) to $599 factory unlocked with USA warranty BUT they are also including for free the JBL Aware C USB-C earphones. The product page there just mentions “FREE JBL earphones”, it’s when you add the U11 phone to the shopping cart that you see more details about the free JBL USB-C earphones.

Here’s a screenshot of the shopping cart with more details on the earphone:

Google’s USB-C to 3.5mm adapter drops to $9

Google triggered Headphone Jack Crisis II and not only that, it’s trying to out-do Apple, outpricing the $9 lightning connector with their own $20 USB-C to 3.5mm adapter out of the gate. But apparently they got enough flack for it that they lowered the price to Apple’s level.

As of the time of writing, the official Google USB-C to 3.5mm adapter is down to $9 at the official Google Store.

Or if you prefer a headphone jack you can avoid all the headphones without one. There are many great choices out there, and you can send the tone-deaf manufacturers a message. Look at the list of Android companies without a headphone jack so far, they are all struggling 🙂

Monoy LeEco USB-C earphone for $14

If you are looking for USB-C earphones, the Monoy LeEco USB-C earphone is currently on sale for $13.88 by Monoy with the order fulfilled by Amazon. These average 3.8 out of 5 based on 31 customer reviews.

This sale ended: The sale mayhaps coincides with the LeEco LePRO 3 being an Amazon deal of the day for $214 until 3am ET on Sunday. This is a new condition, unlocked, with USA warranty model.

PS: note that there are different implementations of audio in smartphones without 3.5mm headphone jack. Some output digital-only (eg iPhones, HTC U11) so you need a DAC/amp, others can output analog audio over USB-C (eg Moto Z).

PS2: note also that smartphones with a USB-C port AND a 3.5mm headphone jack may NOT have implemented analog audio over USB-C. Check forums and specs and such. Do not assume anything about USB-C and Audio until you try it or you read reliable info!
