Sometimes cancel culture gets to headphones too but the open-back over-ear Philips SHP-9500 managed to get reborn of smoke and salt, and it is one of the Newegg deals of the day for Wednesday 10/23/19, going for $65 with free US shipping with up to three pairs per customer, sold by Newegg actual, not marketplace sellers…

Note however that before the Great Cancellation this was on sale for as low as $45 or so. But since it came back it managed to hold a higher price thanks to all the forum hype and it getting on many recommendation lists for sub-$100 headphones…

If you are not in a hurry to get it, keep an eye out for the various sellers at Ali Express to see if anyone blinks and discounts it. As of the time of writing, the Newegg daily deal “defeats” the Ali prices…

I didn’t use the original 9500, but I do have a text and pictures unboxing of the SHP-9500S. Their differences are small but a lot has been written about them in the forums 🙂

The sub-$100 open-back legend is back sold by Amazon actual, not by marketplace sellers. Yes, it’s the Philips SHP-9500 currently going for $79~, sold and shipped by Amazon.

This headphone went as low as $50 before it had ran out a couple of years ago.

Both this and the Philips X2HR are solidly back in production. The X2HR goes for $175~ by Amazon actual and $150 by a marketplace seller (fulfilled by Amazon, so the risk is reduced).

On the European side of things, it currently goes for $200 euro at Amazon Germany…

PS: speaking of on-ears, the Monoprice lightweight closed on-ears are in, and an “unboxing post” is in the works. These appear to share a common ancestry with the AmazonBasics version [which appear to be gone from Amazon’s USA and Germany websites] but I don’t have them anymore, so I can’t compare them directly. From early listening, it sounds like they have a similar sound signature: tastefully bassy, better suited for modern music; not classical…
