$180 your Sennheiser choice: HD 6XX or HD 560S

It is good to have options! As part of the Black Friday festivities, Massdrop is having a sale on a couple of wired open-back over-ear options for $180 each!

One option is their “own” Sennheiser HD 6XX and the other option is the generally available Sennheiser HD 560S

Or you can buy them both and spend in the rest of 2022 writing comparison posts on reddit and headfi and Zeosfi and such 😉

The HD 560S goes for $180 elsewhere as well, BUT if your Massdrop order total is $250+, you can earn a $20 promotional bonus as part of their Black Friday bonus promotion

Massdrop offers a “make your own deal” offer

For Black Friday, until 11/28/21, Massdrop is having a make your own deal type of an offering by giving out a promotional gift card depending on the purchase amount you make. This has to be on a single transaction and shipping and taxes are EXCLUDED.

For example, if you buy one $50 headphone, one $100 headphone, you pay $20 shipping and $15 tax, the amount the qualifies for the bonus will be $150 (the cost of the two headphones).

The bonus is calculated as follows:

+ Spend $250, get a $20 bonus
+ Spend $500, get a $50 bonus
+ Spent $750, get a $100 bonus

The bonus will be emailed to you on December 1st in 2021 and must needs be spent in a single transaction by January 31 in 2022. The bonus cannot be combined with other discounts per their terms.

Sennheiser HD 8XX Open Over-Ears down to $949

As part of the Black Friday festivities, Massdrop is giving a healthy discount to their Sennheiser co-flagship. That’s right, for a limited time, $949 gets you the new condition wired open-back over-ear Sennheiser HD 8XX headphones. This is based on the “HD 800 S” and made in Germany as well.

Massdrop offers 30 day returns (from the day of delivery) for both US and international shoppers. It comes with a 2-year warranty. It is estimated to ship on December 1st (in 2021)…

All sales are final on this offer. No mention of warranty in the listing. This is expected to ship mid-October 2021.

Koss KPH30i On-Ears for $20 [ends soon]

As of the time of writing, there are less than 24 hours remaining for this decidedly bang for the buck headphone at Massdrop, it is the new condition lightweight open-back Koss KPH30i on-ears going for $20 (from a regular price of $30). It is available in three different color schemes. It comes with the usual Koss limited lifetime warranty.

Orders are estimated to ship in late May 2021, and will get shipped by Massdrop itself.

You can buy as many as you want! Never too early to buy Christmas presents for December 2021 🙂

Sennheiser HD 820 arrives at Massdrop!

Massdrop fans, we have Sennheiser-y news for you! The Sennheiser closed-back flagship, the HD 820 is now available for purchase at the Massdrop website. This is the standard version, it is not a “Massdrop x Sennheiser” co-production.

The price right now is $2000, which is also the price at reputable online dealers such as B&H Photo. The prices at Amazon’s start at $1850 BUT look who’s offering them at $1850. Do you know these retailers? Are they authorized Sennheiser dealers? (SPOILER ALERT: they are not!)

PS: to clarify something in case it’s confusing for those not living and breathing on Amazon. If a product is shipped by Amazon (“fulfilled by Amazon”) but sold by a 3rd-party/marketplace seller, the warranty status of the product is determined by the authorized dealer status of the 3rd-party/marketplace seller. Just because it is shipped by Amazon, there’s no automatic transubstantiation of the warranty status!

Massdrop X E-MU Purpleheart Closed Over-Ears for $75

Knock, On Wood, Baby! If you love wood (no pun intended) in your headphones, you can get the new condition wired closed-back over-ear E-MU Purpleheart headphones in the “Massdrop X” edition at the Massdrop website for $75 with free US shipping and free US returns.

This is an “in-stock drop” or as today’s Massdrop kids like to call it, a “Ready to ship” item, so it will ship quickly. With the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, the shipping estimate is slightly longer than the usual two business days, as of the time of writing the shipping estimate is January 4 in 2021.

Being a Massdrop collaboration, this comes with a 1-year manufacturer warranty.

This is the most spartan package ever, you get the headphones and nothing else. The cable is glued-in, so no accessories included 🙂

PS: if the look is familiar, yes, there is a “Fostex the people” connection. Here’s a blast from the past video from Tyll with engineer Chan Ming Tat talking about the creation of the E-MU wood line…

Tin Hifi T4 In-Ears for $70 [MD]

David Bowie’s “Tin Machine” may have inadvertently predicted the rise of “Tin” portable audio with the “tin machine, tin machine, take me anywhere” lyrics 😉

Joking aside, the new condition Tin Hifi T4 in-ears are currently on sale for $70 at the Massdrop website. They come with a stylish brown case and six pairs of eartips (some black, some pink).

The shipping estimate is late January 2021, so this is not for holiday shopping gifts for sure! There’s no mention of warranty in the listing…

JVC HA-FDX1 dual carbon IEMs for $200 [MD]

In the US market, JVC is not synonymous with audiophile headphones but some companies are sometimes fine with just being “Big in Japan”. The accountants of course are never happy with that, so with all this totally unnecessary paragraph we have…

.. the JVC HA-FDX1 dual carbon in-ears now on-offer for $200 with free US shipping and free US returns at the Massdrop website

This is a “Ready to Ship” product (the artist formerly known as “in-stock drops”), so other things equal, it will ship in about two business days from purchase.

You have a 30-day return window but there’s no mention of warranty in the listing.

The kit includes three removable tuning nozzles, a carrying case, and five different sizes of “Spiral Dot+” eartips. And the earphones of course 🙂 And the removable cable of course 🙂

With three tuning nozzles, some can use the division by three trick to justify the purchase. It’s like paying $66.67 per sound signature 🙂

Finally IN-STOCK: Drop + THX Panda for $399

It’s FINALLY in-stock! Ring the online bells! The Drop + THX Panda wireless over-ear closed-back headphones are, as of the time of writing, in-stock at the Massdrop website for $399 with free US shipping [discounted international shipping available] and free US returns, with a 2-year Drop International Warranty.

Better yet, this is estimated to ship in mid-December (based on the blog-posting date; obviously if you read this a week later, the estimated shipping date will be different)…

Optionally you can add a Drop Panda Boom Mic to your order for +$49.

As a quick refresher, this uses planar-ribbon drives, supports LDAC, apt-X HD and Adaptive, AAC, SBC of course [the lowest common bluetooth denominator these days and the ones to be avoided by audiophiles of course], bluetooth 5.0, 10-minute quick charge for 3 hour battery time, 375g weight, IPX 6, USB-C charging [finally the headphone companies are waking up], and carrying case.

Plenty has already been written about it, the internet and forum search buttons are your friends 🙂

Here’s the Drop “Hype video” (about as long as most of today’s hit singles):

Hifiman HE-5XX Planar Magnetics for $220 [MD]

Planar time once again at Massdrop, Deputy Ambassadors of the Planar Republic 🙂

They are currently offering, as an in-stock drop (meaning it ships within a couple of business days from purchase), the new condition open-back over-ear wired Hifiman 5XX planar-magnetics, a Massdrop x Hifiman collaboration, for $220 with free US shipping and free US returns (discounted international shipping as well) with a 1-year manufacturer warranty…

This is the sixth Hifiman x Massdrop collaboration… Optionally you can purchase a 3-year MassDrop extended warranty for +$30. The extended warranty is US only…

Alpha & Delta KS1 IEMs for $17 [MD]

Massdrop has entered the Chili’s menu earphone price range! That’s right, $17 gets you the new condition Alpha & Delta KS1 IEMs as part of the Black-Cyber week sales! This is a limited time promotion.

This is available in four color schemes. It comes with a detachable cable, extra eartips and a carrying case. There’s no mention of warranty in the listing (it is $17 after all). This is estimated to ship in mid-January 2021, so patience is indeed still a virtue 🙂

In other Black-Cyber action, they have the new condition Moondrop KXXX IEMs on sale for $169 with an early January 2021 shipment estimate…

DARKVOICE 336SE OTL headphone amp for $200 [MD]

Among the Cyber Monday promotions at Massdrop there’s an OTL headphone amp, the new condition DARKVOICE 336SE OTL going for $200 with your choice of 110V or 220V. This will ship in early January 2021, so keep that mind if you are looking for holiday season gifts. There is no mention of warranty in the listing…

Speaking of Massdrop, they have a Gaming Value Meal of the non-edible kind. If you start with the Drop ENTR mechanical keyboard page and from there you add the Sennheiser PC-37X gaming headset, and proceed to the shopping cart their total price will drop from $180 ($90 each) to $150. A combined purchase discount. No coupon is needed, this happens automatically during this limited time promotion…

Another one of their offers if you are interested in Mr Dan Clark Audio (DCA) ear-speakers (ha!). They are offering the new condition Drop + DCA AEON open X headphones of the V-Planar magnetic kind for $450 with free US shipping and free US returns. This is an in-stock drop, it will ship in a couple of business days… Optionally you can add a 3-year Drop extended warranty for +$40…

Tin Hifi T4 IEMs for $70 at Massdrop

Tin has been building a reputation for itself, and now the T4 IEMs are part of the Massdrop Black Friday, on sale for $70 with an early January 2021 shipping estimate. There’s no mention of warranty in the listing. They come with a nice looking case and various eartips [see gallery picture #6 over there]… This is the standard version, it is not a “Massdrop X” version [there’s enough of these that we now have to specify to prevent potential confusions]…

Hifiman HE-4XX Planars drop to $120

If you’ve been planar-curious but haven’t taken the jump in yet, here’s a lower risk price! Massdrop has dropped the price of the new condition wired open-back over-ear Hifiman HE-4XX planar magnetics to $120 with free US shipping and free US returns with a 1-year manufacturer warranty. My Oh My! These will ship in early December 2020.

You have an option to add a 3-year Drop warranty with accidental coverage for +$20, US buyers only. Normally I avoid optional $warranties$, but this is Hifiman 🙂 They average 4.4 out of 5 based on 1414 customer reviews over there, but do take a look at the 1-star reviews, thus mayhaps the $20 3-year Drop warranty is not a bad idea?

Sennheiser PC-37X Massdrop Open Gaming Headset down to $90

Gaming without frontiers, war without tears! Or something like that. Anyway, Peter Gabriel silliness aside, Massdrop has another discount for gamers, the new condition Massdrop X Sennheiser PC-37X open-back over-ear wired gaming headset is down to $90!

Since this is a product co-born [new word?] by Massdrop and Sennheiser, it comes with a 2-year manufacturer warranty. These will ship quickly, as of the time of writing the shipping estimate is December 1st ~ 2020 – to be sure 🙂

Massdrop X Focal Elex Open Over-Ears for $550

It’s not FOCAL week, I just post whatever deals I run into 🙂 As one of their Black Friday offerings, Massdrop is offering their new condition Massdrop X Focal Elex open-back over-ear wired headphones for $550 with a 2-year manufacturer warranty. Per the listing this is handmade in France!

This is estimated to ship in mid-December. Given the COVID situation, it may or may not arrive by the year-ending holidays, so YMMV (as with everything these days)…

There’s also an optional $20 off combined purchase discount if you purchase it together with the DROP + THX AAAâ„¢ 789 LINEAR AMPLIFIER. You add this from the product listing page, not from the shopping cart like you used to…

KOSS ESP/95X Electrostatic System (headphones and matching amp) drop to $390

Time to reuse my favorite most irritating phrase! Come on Barbie, let’s have an electrostatic party! It’s a sale, a Black Friday week sale at Massdrop and now $390 is all it takes to get your hands on the new condition KOSS ESP/95X ELECTROSTATIC SYSTEM. This includes both the electrostatic headphones and their matching amplifier. Free US shipping and free US returns. International shipping is not free but it is discounted. You have a power option of 120V or 220V depending on your location and power situation/needs/preferences…

This is a KOSS x Massdrop co-operation and it comes with the customary KOSS limited lifetime warranty of the legendary company from the state of Wisconsin. And when you open the package, you will definitely smell their dairy air 😉

This is a quick-shipping offer, they are estimated to ship on November 30 in 2020, so it’s not one of those wait-and-pray five month long Massdrop offers 🙂

Philips SHP-9500 resurfaces at …Massdrop!

It’s the return of an old hype-darling as Philips is getting re-invigorated with its new masters. That’s right, the open-back over-ear wired Philips SHP-9500 is now on-offer at Massdrop for $70. This is the standard version, not a Massdrop customization. The offer runs for the next seven days [as of the time of writing] and it is expected to ship in early January 2021, so patience is definitely a virtue, and it obviously won’t get here/there before Christmas 🙂

Plenty has been written about this and its SHP-9500S cousin. Here we have a text and pictures un-boxing of the cousin, which is pictured below…

Sennheiser IE-60 arrive at Massdrop for $100

Joining the “$100 in-ears party” is a new entry at Massdrop, they have now began offering the new condition Sennheiser IE-60 IEMs for $100. This is the standard version of the earphone, not a Massdrop custom production.

This is not an in-stock drop. They are estimated to ship by mid-December 2020. They also need to reach the minimum purchase quantity to activate (six more sales needed as of the time of writing of this blog-post)…

Hifiman HE-4XX Planars drop to $160

Massdrop is back with more Black Friday 2020 offers, headlined by the new condition Hifiman HE-4XX planar-magnetic open-back over-ear wired headphones going for $160 with free US shipping and free returns. International shipping is discounted but not free. It comes with a 1-year warranty but optionally those in the US can add for an extra $20 a 3-year Massdrop warranty with accidental coverage.

This is not an in-stock drop. Shipping is estimated to begin in early December 2020.

Noble X Massdrop sale: Universal for $125, Luxe for $45

Curious about the Noble IEMs but don’t want to spend big bucks to get their more high-end options? You are in luck because Massdrop is having a couple of their more affordable options on sale as part of their “Holiday Specials Event”:

+ Noble X Massdrop X Universal IEMs for $125

+ Noble Luxe Massdrop X IEMs for $45

+ they come with free US shipping and free US returns
+ discounted international shipping (but not free)
+ Noble Audio warranty

+ both of these are “in-stock drops” meaning they are available at MD’s warehouse and will ship quickly (COVID delays permitting that is of course implied about everything we say these days)

They Are Back: KOSS KSC-75X Massdrop X for $20

These are the best kept secret in the world of pragmatic audiophiles. Neither retailers, nor publishers of high-brow audiophilia want you to know how good these are because you may just stop paying attention to the four-figure stuff 😉

And “these” are back once again for ordering at Massdrop, just in time for the holidays, it’s the Massdrop X KOSS KSC-75X Clip-ONs going for a very down to earth price of $20 with free US shipping and returns, and discounted international shipping. They come with the usual Koss limited lifetime warranty.

One difference between these and the original KSC-75 is that the Massdrop edition has a utilitarian 1-button remote/mic for the smartphone/tablet/DAP users 🙂

This drop is in “pre-order status” with nine days left (as of the time of writing) and they are estimated to ship in late November 2020.

I’m going to jump onto this for sure (unless I forget like the previous time) because my trusty old KSC-75 (which I found on the clearance/trash-bin of an Office Depot (if I recall correctly)) [see text and pictures unboxing] has now become “mono” [only one side plays sound]…

This one you can HYPE HYPE HYPE without fear!

PS: this has the added benefit of not messing your hair (for those lucky enough to have hair that is) and it doesn’t put too much pressure on your head and jaw with prolonged use (eg some over-ears and on-ears) or doesn’t keep your ears sealed to the world for too many hours (eg in-ears)… These type of clip-ons and the classic earbuds are, in my humble opinion, the easiest on the ears, especially for prolonged use…

Seven Days Left: Hifiman HE-5XX Planars for $220

One of the Hype Headphones du jour at the moment is the open-back over-ear Hifiman HE-5XX planar-magnetic headphones and their listing at Massdrop has seven more days [as of the time of writing of this blog-post] before they begin shipping. They are currently in pre-order status. If you want to be among the first to have them on your non-planar head, you have seven days to decide!

They currently go for $220 with free US shipping and free US returns. International shoppers get discounted shipping and they have a 30-day return option, but the shipping cost on the return is on the shopper, not on Massdrop.

They come with a 1-year manufacturer warranty. They are, as the name hints at, based on the Hifiman HE-500 series…

Hype, Hype, Hype!!! 😉

Hifiman HE-35X Open Over-Ears (dynamic) for $75

There’s another bubbling under options for open-back dynamic over-ear headphones under $100 and it is currently on sale at the Massdrop website. “It” being the new condition Hifiman HE-35X going for $75 with free US shipping and free US returns. International shipping is not free but it is discounted. Customs and import duties are your responsibility…

This is an in-stock drop, meaning it is available to ship directly from the Massdrop warehouses. Needless to say, due to COVID, some delays are possible… It comes with a 1-year manufacturer warranty…

PS: some of the other well-known open-back options under $100 include Grado SR80/60*, Sennheiser HD 5**, Audio Technica ATH-AD*, Philips SHP-9?00?, etc…

Hifiman HE-4XX Planar Open Over-Ears drop to $160

If you want to try out this “planar type” which has shown to have staying power, for a limited time Massdrop has dropped the price of the open-back over-ear HifiMan HE-4XX planars to $160 with free US shipping and free US returns. International shipping is discounted but not free (depending on location, situation, COVIDalia, etc)…

Also for a limited time, an open over-ear but dynamic headphone is on sale at Massdrop, the Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee are going for $150 with free US shipping and returns.

Both of these headphones are in-stock and ready to ship. Their current shipping estimate is around two business days from ordering time. No long waits for them to be made by the Audiophool Elves and Dwarves under the Magical Mystical Audio Mountain 😉

PSA: Massdrop Europe experiment currently out of stock

I was just checking and I noticed that the products featured in “Massdrop Europe” experiment are all marked out of stock. I do not know if this is COVID-related or BREXIT-related or for another reason. These are products that get physically shipped from Massdrop to a European location, so they can ship from within the EU, so customers do not have to pay customs or deal with long waits and other related customs issues. Of course they have to pay that lovely VAT 🙂

More on this topics and some prices I managed to grab in our previous posts

Hifiman HE-35X Dynamic Open-Back Over-Ears for $75 w/FS & FR & 1-Year Warranty [MD]

This two-figure deal may have gotten lost in our previous Massdrop sale round-up, so it’s getting its own post to make sure people notice it, we are in the COVID-era after-all, you don’t have to spend 3+ figures on new audio gear 🙂

Hifiman has a reputation of headphones not being as sturdy as most other brands, just check the various forums. With that in mind mayhaps, Massdrop is offering this with free shipping, free returns (no questions asked) and a 1-year warranty. Plus you are only risking $75, not $2,000 🙂

With that out of the way, Massdrop is offering the new condition open-back over-ear Hifiman HE-35X for $75 with free S&H and free returns.

NOTE that this is a dynamic headphone, NOT planar-magnetic!

Massdrop Audiophile Sale In-Progress (15 options)

Massdrop is running an audiophile sale as of the time of writing, with the following 12 headphones and 3 amp/DACs participating… I do not know when the sale ends…

We start with the amp/DACs, in price order:

  • MASSDROP X ALEX CAVALLI TUBE HYBRID AMP (CTH) for $175
  • MASSDROP X ALEX CAVALLI LIQUID CARBON X AMP for $200
  • MASSDROP CTH + SDAC DAC/AMP for $250

And now we go to the headphones, first the four in-ears, in price order:

  • Massdrop x Noble X Universals for $125
  • Massdrop Plus Universals for $200
  • Massdrop x Noble Kaiser 10 Universals for $700
  • Massdrop x Empire Ears Zeus Universals for $750

As you can see, being their own “brand” gives them more control over pricing. They don’t have to wait for manufacturer-authorized instant-savings promotions and MAPs and such 🙂

And now to the eight over/on-ear headphones, again in ascending price order:

  • Drop + Hifiman HE-35X for $75
  • Massdrop x Sennheiser PC-37X gaming headset for $100
  • Drop + Hifiman HE-4XX planars for $145
  • Sennheiser HD-58X Jubilee for $150
  • Sennheiser HD-6XX for $195
  • Beyerdynamic DT-17XX GO for $380
  • KOSS ESP/95X electrostatic system for $400
  • Drop + Mr Speakers Ether CX Closed for $750

Back In-Stock: Massdrop Objective 2 Head-Amp for $95 [110V Medium Gain only]

If you are a current or future member of the “Cult of the NwAvGuy”, we have good news for you! It is back in-stock at Massdrop, the new condition Massdrop Objective 2 headphone amp going for $95 with free US shipping. Up to ten per customer per shopping cart. Note however that only the 110V Medium Gain power adapter is available. The other three options are not available [greyed out in the shopping cart].

This is an “in-stock drop”, so it will ship quickly (but keep in mind COVID-19 is adding potential delays)…

M&O MOOH-BE00BT Closed Bluetooths for $45 w/FS [MD]

The normalization of bluetooth continues with CANJAM hype 🙂 These goofily named bluetooth over/on-ear [not sure which one it is] are available at the Massdrop website for $45 with free US shipping with a mid-May shipping estimate. There’s no mention of warranty in the listing…

“This” refers to the closed-back M&O MOOH-BE00BT, which come with a case and the usual (charging cable, audio cable, etc). These play with 3.5mm and over Bluetooth 4.0 with apt-X support.

They also come with a flat headphone stand. It is an unusual stand, it holds them folded, with one earcup resting on the flat stand. This is not a hanging stand [see pictures over there, easier than me trying to describe it here]. You can select in the shopping cart whether you want a clear or black stand.

Depending on the shape of the earcups of your other headphones, if/how they fold, and how their weight is balanced, they may or may not fit on these [unlike conventional standing stands that can fit most headphones].
